Unexpected Lessons

Today is Groundhog Day. Spending most of my life in Southern California this day didn't matter much to me. Winter usually felt like it ended when we returned to school from Christmas/New Year holidays.

After school Noah dug out a craft project from his backpack; tomorrow is art day, but he said sometimes they do special projects in class. He said the class got to see Punxsutawney Phil on TV and learned there will be six more weeks of Winter. Then they all made their own groundhogs. When Jonah saw the craft, he wanted one. Thankfully it's an easy craft and I have all the materials at home.

This is really exciting to me. We might miss out on learning about the 21 California Missions, making dioramas in shoe boxes, and even Sixth Grade Camp. But here we have Groundhog Day,Maple Syrup Weekend, and Presidents' Day won't just be a long weekend of sales at the local mall.
